The 10 Shilling and 1 Pound notes first introduced by the Bank of England in 1928 are generally known as the 'Britannia' design because of the small seated picture of Britannia in the top left corner of each note. This famous style of banknote was used in the UK for over 30 years.
We have been fortunate to obtain a stock of notes in virtually unused condition; a rare occurrence considering that they are over 50 years old. The are signed by P. S. Beale who was Chief Cashier of the Bank of England from 1949 to 1955. The notes appear to have been taken directly from the bank and simply folded to leave a round curve at the centre. They have seen no real circulation and are as fresh and crisp now as they were all those years ago. We think it likely that they have come from old wage packets which were never opened at the time, but just saved intact.
These notes are very reminiscent of England in the immediate post War period when money was scarce and to have '10 Bob' in your pocket made for a very good night out. (That's just 50p in today's terms!)
The price of this lovely pair of notes is just £38.00 (approximately US$76.00)
